The case involved a pregnant woman who was advised to undergo an amniocentesis to rule out Down syndrome, despite the procedure not being medically necessary. During the procedure, the maternal-fetal medicine specialist negligently inserted the amniocentesis needle through the patient's bowel and into the amniotic sac, causing catastrophic complications.

As a result of the error, the patient developed a severe infection that led to the stillbirth of her baby at 22 weeks of pregnancy. She subsequently became critically ill, requiring intubation and months of hospitalization. The infection caused permanent kidney failure, leaving her dependent on dialysis until she ultimately underwent a kidney transplant two years later.
